The holiday season is upon us and so is the frantic rush to do, buy, experience, and see all we can.
Do you struggle, like me, to slow down and enjoy the time you’ve been given? Do you experience the pull of making sure every moment is filled to its fullest?
Here are some things to think about as you work to avoid all the stress that often overshadows the tidings of comfort and joy.
- Pick an advent devotional that you can read privately or (better yet) with your family each day. Here are two that I highly recommend. (Click here and here) Having those moments to soften your heart towards the real meaning of this holiday season causes you to slow down and breathe in the grace that has been given. The overflow of a heart fixed on Christ is peace, even in the midst of all the hustle and bustle of life.
2. Take a moment and listen to those beautiful Christmas carols that are playing over your radio. They sing about the gospel……a perfect and holy God coming to live a perfect life on your behalf; making a way for you to be reconciled to Him. There is no greater joy to be found! Stop. Listen. Remember.
3. Take a moment throughout your day to examine your heart and motives. Are you rushing around because you need to be in control? Because you’re afraid to let people down? Because you need to have it all together? Again…..take a moment to stop and remember. Stop striving and trying to accomplish everything on your to-do list in your own strength. Remember that the reason we have a Christmas is because you are unable to perfectly do what is required; living a sinless life.
Christ has come. Emmanuel. God with us. He has come and conquered sin and death on your behalf. He has made a way for you to be in communion with him.
Because of this glorious truth you can stop rushing around trying to do #allthethings and just REST. Rest in his faithfulness to provide all that you need. Rest in his ability to give peace and comfort, even when your circumstances are full of chaos. Rest in his finished work on your behalf.
If you are not experiencing the rest that I’m talking about, please know that you can contact me any time at firstname.lastname@example.org. I would love to talk with you about the way to find true peace.
